BYOGB - Bring Your Own Ghetto Blaster BYOGB was the first installment in an ongoing series of events sponsored by thenativegaze.com. In contrast to gallery openings, art festivals, and typical Hongdae nightlife, we aim to bring art and other creative pursuits to the streets in an accessible way. These events, held in public spaces, offer an alternative forum to exchange ideas about art and culture in Seoul and seek to challenge the local art community to get outside the gallery and have fun.
Step 1: Scavenging Seoul is littered with crazy markets that sell new and used items from around the world. Any Sunday you might have your shit together enough to leave the house, they’re worth checking out. Take your time in each alley sifting through the old man jackets, plastic shoes, crappy antiques, and floor to ceiling walls of used televisions blasting k-pop videos and cartoons. Feel free to take an abandoned wheelchair for a spin or sample various sexual enhancement products and if you’re lucky you might find a total gem of a ghetto blaster hidden among the junk. Run DMC would proud.
Step 2: Paint that Junk Solid Gold Admire the new toy. Play an old Pretenders tape. Dang. Still not enough? Spray paint that shit gold. However, avoid painting under the influence of too many vodkas. It will kind of look like shit in the morning.
Step 3: Find the Spot Walk up and down the Han River (a lot). Watch out for The Host. Scour under bridges and sewer treatment plants and you might find a useable spot. Big, empty, raw, and un-used. Most importantly, free of charge.
