The Native Gaze recently had the chance to visit the studio of the THUS artwork company. The group consists of four members and was founded in 2004. However, it’s hard to define the exact nature of the group. They are not a magazine, a design studio, or an artist collective, but mainly a group of four individuals who come together to pursue creative projects when they are inspired. All members conduct other activities as individuals in fields such as photography, graphic design, filmmaking, and music.
Unlike other art groups, their goal is not self-promotion as artists. They are interested in issues that affect society and this usually forms the basis for their creative works. Their past work has tackled big issues such as the conflict with Japan over the Dokdo Islands as well as their recent stencil campaign with the message, “Remember Your Choice,” which is a critique of Korean voters’ mentality at the polls. It is refreshing to meet some young creative people who are inspired by real issues and are not just out for fame and money.
