LEE JIN JU – ‘Communication Among Silent Objects’ The artist’s second solo-exhibition presents a group of drawings showing very detailed images of various subject matters. The viewer is meant to share the artist’s personal experiences and feelings while staring at the details of her work in their own reality. Through the process of drawing ordinary things, the artist is able to organize and give form to all of her senses.
2008.03.01 AHN DOO JIN Ahn Doo Jin created an installation that completely transformed the space of the gallery. A bright orange construction occupied the middle of the space, which was surrounded by psychedelic paintings on the wall and thousands of small items arranged on the floor like a small city. The items range from plastic toys to empty soju bottles. The artist’s careful organization suggests both the meticulous thinking of an architect as well as the innocent freedom of a child building with blocks.
2008.02.26 ARTIME JOE AND JAY FLOW – ‘Wall Destroyer’ This exhibition featured both huge, installed walls of classic graffiti work and more monochromatic, psychedelic, even sci-fi inspired murals. Both artists, who work together as the JNJCrew, presented highly technical work, showing their experience with the spray can.
2008.02.14 CHOI SUNG SEOK Through detailed paintings, the artist captures the mundane with vivid clarity and a near photographic quality. His everyday scenes focus on repetition found in the city that is created by mass production and the efforts of modern civilization. Most memorable is a work showing students studying in the library arranged like the books on the wall, in perfect order and repetition.

2007.12.15 CLICK for exhibition photos YEOIDO ART FAIR 2007 The Yeoido Art Fair presents paintings by 6 artists. Yang Choi Nam’s small works on canvas create intimate spaces using a mixture of ink, paint, and pattern fabrics, while Ether’s work is more graphic. The artist paints using bold colors and simple geometric shapes, which is a stark contrast to BF’s monochromatic pieces that show abstract forms and human figures. Yoo Chang Chang’s work is more chaotic and frenzied. He works freely on the canvas using drips of paint, collage elements and child-like scribbles. Jay Kim’s work has an iconographic element as repeated characters and faces appear throughout and finally, Ji Dong Hoon continues to focus on images of dolls and toys.

Gallery Lightbox presents new work from Spanish graffiti artists Numi and Malicia. Both artists hail from Barcelona and were invited to Seoul to participate in this 2 week exhibition. The show consists of paintings on canvas, works on paper, as well as a photo collage of their street work.
2007.11.20 LEE CHANG - 'Homo oblitus'
Repeated images of skull-headed figures, cave-like environments and ancient reptiles give this exhibition a primal, almost tribal air. The ‘조용한 흔적기관 찾아서’ 3-part series shows the discovery, veneration, and subsequent worship of a female, mermaid figure using a palette of earthy, gold tones.
2007.11.19 CLICK for exhibition photos HAN SEOK HYUN - 'The Joy of Being Wrong'
Han Seok Hyun’s acrylic on polypropelene forms perfectly capture the crispness of a fresh head of lettuce. With titles such as ‘Holy Fresh!’ and ‘Must Be Fresh!’ his works become a humorous take on ‘freshness’ in art.
2007.11.13 MULLAE ART FESTIVAL - 'Closing Party'
Last Saturday was the closing party for the month-long Mullae Art Festival. Mullae-dong was oringinally known to be an industrial area, but recently has become popular with the young creative community in Seoul, who can use the abandoned 2nd and 3rd floors of the factories as cheap work spaces. The closing party consisted of one theatrical performance, 2 dance performances, an outdoor art exhibition, and outdoor installation. For the final collaborative performance, the audience was given rain ponchos and ushered outside, where there was a live-painting and projection performance followed by a trip up to the roof to see a giant, white sculpture flying a white flag.
2007.11.06 CLICK for exhibition photos FAY SHIN - 'Melting Operation'
Fay Shin’s work often flows off the canvas onto the wall. The colorful forms in her abstract paintings resemble psychedelic wisps of smoke or gardens of wilting flower petals.
2007.11.03 CLICK to read more about Shin Hyeon Jeong's previous exhibition at Gallery King JEONG YOON SEONG – ‘Moving Landscape’
In the latest installation at Project Space Sarubia, Jeong has inserted a wooden floor that dissects the space vertically in half. The change in height becomes quite apparent when looking at the gallery workers who are sitting below the level of the floor. The striped wood itself has an odd quality somewhere between a skate ramp and a bowling alley, but the real shock comes when the entire floor begins to tilt and move in short intervals. Audible mechanical sounds suggest the system is operated by some type of machinery hidden under the floor.

The first show at Gallery Sogool featured works by 5 young artists, Ji Min Hui, Lee Du Won, Kim Jae Hong, Jeong Ji Seon, and Yun Ye Ji. The majority of the works were simple drawings on paper. The ending party included a live-painting performance by VEMO, where he used microphones to produce sounds while painting in the gallery.
2007.10.08 YEUM GWANG PHIL
Yeum Gwang Phil’s first solo exhibition featured several larger paintings as well as a series of uniform sized works on canvas. The images are reminiscent of tarot cards and are filled with mythological images and symbols giving some of the works an almost medieval feel. The opening featured a performance by the up-and-coming ska band, No. 1 Korean.

This show presented a series of small works on wood panels by artist, Yang Choi Nam. The artist mixes architectural perspective lines with flat patterns to create surreal and imaginary spaces. A curious person often inhabits these views, but the artist never allows us to catch more than a glimpse of the figure.
