SEOK-SU MARKET PROJECT - 'Open Studio'

The Seok-Su Market Project is a 3-month residency project for nine local and international artists.  Each artist was given a vacant storefront space located within Seok-Su market in Anyang to use as a studio.  Local markets like Seok-Su are quickly disappearing in Seoul and being replaced by larger commercial operations.  This project was an attempt to call attention to these local communities.   The artists were embedded into the traditional market environment, working side by side with shoe salesmen, foodstuff retailers, and small, family-run restaurants.  Instead of simply inserting art pieces into public spaces, personal interactions between artists and local residents become a new, and perhaps more meaningful form of public art.
